Hanging from China's gigantic underbelly on its southeastern coast, Macau covers all of 27 sq. km (almost 11 sq. miles). About 64km (40 miles) west of Hong Kong across the Pearl River Estuary, it served as Portugal's last holdout in Asia until 1999, when it was handed back to China. In 1993 the Guinness Book of World Records declared Macau the most densely populated territory in the world, with more than 69,000 people per square mile. Today, due to a vigorous policy of land reclamation that has more than doubled its size over the last few decades, figures hover around 47,130 residents per square mile, admittedly still one of the highest densities in the world.
