Auguste Borget (1808-1877), born in the small French town of Issoudun, embarked in 1836 on a four-year-long voyage around the world, which took him from the Americas to the Far East. In 1838, Borget arrived on the South China coast and spent over a year travelling to pre-British Hong Kong, Guangdong and Macau, while being stationed mostly in the latter. Upon his return to France in 1840, Borget painted the famous View of the Great Chinese Temple in Macau, presented at a Salon in Paris and acquired by French King Louis-Philippe in 1841. The following year, he published Sketches of China and the Chinese, a richly illustrated volume with lithographic renderings of the scenes and landscapes he had captured in China. The English version appeared a year later.
In an age before cameras, Borget created realistic pencil sketches and precious watercolours, which were later followed by prints and oil paintings.
The exhibition Auguste Borget: A Painter-Traveller on the South China Coast is organised by the Macao Museum of Art in collaboration with the Alliance Française de Macao and the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macao.
